WTF is an EPUB?

Not a beer. Not a scam. Just the file format books come in when nobody's trying to lock you into their store.

A PDF is a photograph of a page. An EPUB is a book.

It reflows to your screen, your font size, your night mode. You can make the text bigger without pinching and dragging like a maniac. It remembers where you stopped. And it opens in whatever app you want, because nobody owns the format.

Yes, it is one more step than a PDF. This is what you get for it.

First: where did it go?

Half the confusion isn't the format — it's that the file vanished. It didn't. It's in your Downloads folder, or the Files app on your phone, and it's named something like 50-shits-to-a-tinfoil-hat.epub. If you can find it, you can open it.

iPhone & iPad▾

Fastest: tap the .epub file. It opens in Apple Books. That's the whole process.

Deleted Books at some point? Most people have. Reinstall it, free, and the file will open on the next tap.

If you'd rather not hand Apple your reading habits: KyBook or any EPUB reader from the App Store works the same way. Open the file, choose the app.

Android▾

Fastest: Google Play Books. Open the app, hit the library, upload the file.

Fastest: double-click the file. Books is already installed.

Windows can't open EPUBs on its own. It used to, then Microsoft removed it. You need one free app, once.

Kindle▾

Kindles take EPUBs now, they just make you go around the side. Email the file to your Send to Kindle address and it appears on your device.

Find your address in your Amazon account under Devices. Send from an email address you've approved there, or Amazon will quietly ignore it.

Kobo & other e-readers▾

EPUB is their native format. Plug the reader into a computer with a USB cable and drag the file onto it. Done. No account, no cloud, no permission.

We use EPUB because nobody owns it. No account required, no app that reports what page you're on, no store that can delete the book off your device later. You bought it. It's a file. It's yours.
